Patience is a…

I desperately want to say virtue.

While I believe this wholeheartedly, I’m still learning the art of patience.

I can still hear my Mom’s voice, “Be patient”.

Easier said than done, as the phrase goes.

Why is it so hard to let go and be patient? There are certain souls in this world who are so free. I wonder if they were born this way or if they have practiced the skill of letting go.

I envy them. I look up to them. I strive to have the freedom to let go and finally be patient enough to truly enjoy each and every moment for what it is.

There are times when I’ve been able to feel that peace. To have let go and feel the presence of the moment. That joy has been amazingly life-giving. It’s as if everything around you stops. You’re suddenly aware of all that was and is and could be. I adore it. And yet, it’s fleeting for me because I’m stilling learning this life skill.

I’ve been both a musician and long-distance runner in earlier years of my life. Those

of you who have lived those experiences are familiar with what’s known as the “runner’s high” and the “in the zone”. These are the epitome of being in the present moment.

I’ve been grateful to have experienced both of these as a runner and a musician.

I’ve also been able to practice mindfulness as an adjunct professor and an HR Specialist so that I can be the best leader, teacher and trainer and feel this presence from time to time in my life.

And yet, it’s still fleeting. It takes practice, time and attention.

I wish this for all because it opens up creativity, connectedness, understanding and joy.

One person at a time. One day at a time.

I think it starts like that. Time spent in silence, even if it’s just for a little while each day. It builds to more and more time as that person begins to see and feel their own transformation and crave it more and more.

One person in a family unit starts to change and that spreads to another.

And then another.

And then another.

Soona movement begins.

Perhaps this is how we change the world. By working on changing ourselves, so future generations inherit something better. 🌈
